An Open Access Journal of population research

The Quetelet Journal (RQJ) is a bilingual scientific journal (French/English) dedicated to research in demography. Since 2013, it has been published by the Centre for Demographic Research at UCLouvain, within the IACCHOS Institute. As the only Belgian journal specialized in this field, it publishes empirical and theoretical works — whether classical or innovative — related to population dynamics.

RQJ is aimed at a broad audience of researchers, professionals, and students interested in contemporary demographic issues.

An original editorial line

RQJ welcomes original contributions in both traditional empirical formats and through non-conventional approaches. It promotes a wide and open variety of methodological perspectives, including :

Theoretical literature reviews,
Methodological studies,
Data papers,
Reports of negative results,
Replications of published findings,
Mixed-methods research,
Descriptive analyses of new datasets,
Studies based on unconventional data sources,
And even defenses of heterodox or controversial perspectives.

With 5 to 6 publications per year, it serves as a key reference in both French and English-speaking academic communities and is supported by the FNRS.

A Journal born from the Quetelet Chair

The journal extends the work of the Chaire Quetelet, an annual international conference. It was created to offer a more sustainable and widely disseminated scientific outlet than standard conference proceedings.

In 2024, the journal launched the Demog-Crazy Award to recognize a playful yet thought-provoking article—highlighting that unconventional research can make valuable theoretical or methodological contributions.

All articles are published following a double-blind peer review process and approval by the editorial board. The journal operates under a diamond open access model - free of charge for both authors and readers - with a continuous publication workflow as soon as articles are ready.
