Abstract

Is representative democracy still reformable? This is the task undertaken by groups of activists at the local level in France, Spain, and Belgium, who attempt to monitor the actions of their elected officials in the context of the public debt crisis in Europe in the early 2010s. This book analyzes the conditions that make such activist endeavors possible, the relationship these citizens have with democracy and public authority behind their aspiration to oversee political and institutional actors, their practices, as well as their dilemmas and the consequences of their approaches. It aims to trace the winding path of these citizen-controllers who, while criticizing representative democracy, do not call for its abolition but for its reconfiguration towards a more interactive and less asymmetrical division of political labor between the governing and the governed.
