Causal relations and experimental social science (Room Lecl 93 & teams)
Laura Uyttendaele (laura.uyttendaele@uclouvain.be feel free to reach out to Laura or the organizing team if you have any questions on that session)

While you may not currently use experimental designs, this session invites you to reflect on their potential for future research and making robust causal claims. The session aims to equip you with the skills to decipher experimental papers, contributing to a deeper understanding of the value placed by our discipline on causal inference and empirically guided theoretical refinement. We'll explore the rise of experimental designs in political science, covering various approaches such as laboratory, survey, and field experiments, with applications in political psychology, electoral politics, and legislative politics. The session will also touch on critical aspects like control groups, the balance between internal and external validity, and statistical analysis techniques. Throughout the session, real-world examples from diverse research contexts will be presented, offering practical insights. Whether you plan to incorporate experimental designs into your research or not, this seminar encourages participants to reflect on the possibilities they offer for future research and enhancing causal inference in social science.
