The trade in agricultural commodities is a mainstay of the globalized economy, though the complexity of commodity supply chains makes it difficult to identify the origin of and impact embedded in products. Here I present three lines of work which leverage big data and citizen science to improve transparency in commodity supply chains. Our work helps [i] increase our understanding of how products with high socio-environmental impacts propagate along global supply chains, [ii] increase accountability for companies handling the trade in these commodities, and [iii] empower consumers to make informed choices.
