Visa & residence permit

All non-Belgian students wishing to participate in an exchange program are required to fulfill certain administrative obligations.

Are you a national of a European Economic Area (EEA) country* ?
*EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland.

EEA Nationals

You simply need a valid piece of ID or passport.

Non-EEA Nationals

Is the country of your home institution a member of the EEA?

Ex : you are a Mexican student sent by a Spanish university.

The following documents must be sent to the Saint-Louis coordinator at least one month prior to the start of the mobility. The coordinator will send a notification to the Immigration Office for you.

  • copy of a valid passport
  • proof of a valid residence permit issued by the first Member state
  • address of residence in Belgium (if already known)
  • proof of health insurance coverage

If the International Relation Office has not received any opposition from the Immigration Office, an annex 33 will be delivered to the student after their arrival. The student will need to bring this document when registering to the town hall.

The student must apply for a VISA D to the Embassy or Consulate closest to their home (see list). The following documents will need to be gathered:

  • Valid passport
  • Proof of payment of the administrative fee
    • 220€ (this amount is adjusted on January 1st of each year)
    • Some students can be exempted (see conditions)
  • Certificate of good conduct or copy of criminal record
  • Proof of health insurance covering all risks in Belgium for the duration of the stay
  • Medical clearance delivered by an accredited physician within the 6 months preceding the application
  • Acceptance letter from UCLouvain Saint-Louis Bruxelles (available on Mobility Online)
  • Proof of access to sufficient financial resources

The documents must be written in either German, English, French or Dutch. If not, you the student must join an officially certified translation into one of these four languages.
