Funding

The Research Administration (ADRE) assists researchers with their project preparation and funding.

Safir

SAFIR, the UCLouvain funding platform

SAFIR is an innovative, dynamic and interactive platform, specially designed to facilitate access to the funding opportunities that best suit our researchers.

Use it to find the funding opportunities, grants, scholarships, prizes and calls for proposals best suited to your needs.

SAFIR also enables you to identify the contact persons (within ADRE and ADRI) who can answer your questions and provide you with support. The application is available with your UCLouvain login.

Funding tailored to a variety of research contexts

At UCLouvain, research projects are made possible thanks to adventurous researchers, diverse financial resources, state-of-the-art research infrastructure and equipment.

In terms of research funding, external credits obtained by UCLouvain researchers account for 30% of the university's overall budget. If many public and private funding bodies have confidence in us, it is thanks to significant investment by our researchers, international recognition of their work and specialised support from the Research Administration (ADRE).

ADRE plays a major role in helping researchers identify the sources of funding best suited to their needs. Our experts also provide researchers with specialised support in setting up projects, and are in constant contact with Belgian, foreign and supranational funding bodies.

The Fondation Louvain can also help companies build a partnership project in research and education fields, in line with their core business. The partnership takes the form of a sponsorship agreement, subject to VAT.

Public funding bodies

In Belgium, public funding for research is provided by different bodies:

  • the federal government, via its BELSPO scientific policy, funds research programmes to support the decisions of the federal authorities, as well as researcher mobility and outer space activities;
  • the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles (Wallonia-Brussels Federation), via the Actions de Recherche Concertées (ARC, Joint Research Actions) and the Fonds Spéciaux de Recherche (FSR, Special Research Fund), is more involved in funding “fundamental” research, as is the F.R.S.-FNRS, which, in addition to its historical programmes, now coordinates the Excellence Of Science (EOS) programme for Flanders with the Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (FWO);
  • the Walloon Region and the Brussels Capital Region are more active in applied research, the spin-offs of which are of interest to the regional socio-economic fabric;
  • the European Union finances mainly collaborative or individual projects of a fundamental or applied nature through its Horizon EUROPE framework programme for research and innovation (2021-27)

Private funding bodies

UCLouvain collaborates actively with companies and socio-economic actors by forging numerous research partnerships, either through established programmes or its own funding. The proportion of private funding for research is significant and demonstrates UCLouvain’s ongoing interaction with socio-economic actors, the field in general, and companies.

This collaboration with the private sector can take several forms:

  • research contracts (with ADRE); · research sponsorship agreements (via the Fondation Louvain);
  • analyses;
  • use of university facilities and infrastructure;
  • expertise;
  • advice and consulting;
  • secondment of researchers;
  • continuing education;
  • granting operating licences.
