Abstract: The famous weed-killing substance glyphosate has been the subject of lively scientific controversies, political bargaining and legal disputes since the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified it as probably carcinogenic to humans in 2015. Last July, the European Food and Safety Authority (EFSA) issued its opinion on the risks associated with the use of that substance. As the Commission and the Member States are due to decide on the renewal of glyphosate’s approval in the coming months, this seminar gives specialised NGOs an opportunity to express their views on this hot topic and on what it tells us about the EU’s ability to deliver on its promise to ensure a high level of protection of health and ecosystems.
